New York City is the global hub of several Data-Driven Industries - Finance, Media, Advertising, Fashion, Bioscience, and now Tech - recently surpassing Boston as the 2nd largest recipient of venture capital, second only to Silicon Valley. And with Mayor Bloomberg's ambitious Digital Roadmap, NYC is also positioning itself as a center for Open Data innovation.

On March 7, it passed the most progressive municipal Open Data law in the country - Local Law 11 of 2012. Shortly after, on April 23, it launched the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) - an applied science research institute dedicated to the “Science of Cities”.

In this session, NYCBigApps 2011 Grand Prize Winner Ontodia along with their partner, NYCBigApps 2010 Large Organization Award Winner Revelytix, preview pediacities - Ontodia’s Smarter Cities platform. Leveraging NYC’s Open Data Law - it mates Semantic Technologies with Big Data techniques, as it strives to become the "Bloomberg of Big Linked Open Data".

A 20-year IT veteran, Joel has been involved in a multitude of projects, primarily in bioinformatics, lifesciences, finance, knowledge management and smart cities. After winning in NYCBigApps Challenge in 2011, Joel co-founded Ontodia to use semantic technologies in enabling the "smart" in smart cities. Previously, Joel headed the Knowledge Engineering practice of TCG for four years, implementing semantics at several Fortune 1000 companies.
